| Toy size | Finished height | Recommended eye size |
|---|---|---|
| Micro / keychain | Under 5cm | 3 โ 4mm |
| Mini | 5 โ 10cm | 4 โ 6mm |
| Small | 10 โ 15cm | 6 โ 8mm |
| Medium | 15 โ 22cm | 8 โ 10mm |
| Large | 22 โ 30cm | 10 โ 14mm |
| Extra Large | Over 30cm | 14mm + |
Not sure for babies/toddlers? Skip safety eyes entirely and embroider the eyes instead โ safer and still gives a polished finish.
Eye size has a big impact on an amigurumi's personality and proportions โ too large and a toy looks cartoonish, too small and features can get lost. As a general rule, scale eye size to the finished height of the toy, and always check eye spacing on the actual head before securing them permanently, since placement affects the expression just as much as size.
What size safety eyes should I use for a small amigurumi?
For amigurumi under 10cm tall, 4-6mm safety eyes are typically the best match โ anything larger can overwhelm the small face.
Are safety eyes safe for babies and toddlers?
Safety eyes have a locking backing that makes them very hard to pull out once attached, but they are still a choking hazard if a toy is given to very young children. For babies and toddlers under 3, embroider the eyes instead.
How do I attach safety eyes securely?
Insert the eye post through the fabric before stuffing that section, then push the washer backing on firmly from inside until it clicks and locks โ it should not be removable by hand once attached.
