How this yarn calculator works

Guessing yarn amounts from a pattern's "yardage" listing rarely matches reality, because everyone's gauge and hook tension is a little different. The most reliable way to estimate yarn is the swatch method: crochet a small test piece with the yarn and hook you actually plan to use, record how much yarn it took, then scale that up by the ratio between your swatch area and your finished project's area.

This calculator does that scaling for you and adds a 12% buffer on top, so you're not caught short mid-project. If you know how much yarn comes in one skein or ball, add that too and it will tell you how many skeins to buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much yarn I need for a crochet project?

Crochet a small swatch, weigh or measure how much yarn it used, then compare the swatch area to your finished project area. Scaling that ratio up gives an accurate estimate โ€” this is exactly what the calculator above does for you.

Should I buy extra yarn?

Yes โ€” buy 10โ€“15% more than your estimate. This covers gauge swatches, tension changes, seaming, and future repairs, and helps you avoid dye-lot mismatches if you need to buy more later.

Does yarn weight or fiber affect how much I need?

Yes. Thicker yarn covers more area per gram, so a bulky-weight project needs less yardage than the same size made in fingering weight. The swatch method automatically accounts for this because it uses your actual yarn and gauge. Check the Yarn Weight Guide for typical ranges.
