Border Calculator

Get an even, flat border every time โ€” no rippling, no cupping.

Getting a flat, even border

A border that ripples has too many stitches for the edge it's worked into; one that cups or pulls in has too few. This calculator estimates the right stitch count for one round around a rectangular piece โ€” perimeter stitches based on your edge gauge, plus extra stitches at each of the four corners so the border turns cleanly instead of puckering.

Frequently asked questions

How many stitches do I add at each corner of a border?

A common rule is 3 stitches in the corner stitch (or "3 sc in same st") to let the border lie flat without puckering or rippling. This calculator uses that as the default, but you can adjust it.

Why does my border ripple or cup?

Rippling usually means too many stitches were added around the edge relative to the piece's gauge. Cupping or puckering means too few. Match your border stitch count closely to your piece's perimeter gauge to keep it flat.

Can I use this for a granny square border too?

Yes โ€” enter the square's finished side length as both width and height for a square perimeter calculation.
